The Victorian Lady
In sharp contrast to the cool and breezy summer clothing worn today by women and girls, the Victorian Lady was covered from head to toe in layers of fabric. Wendy Batchelder, an historical interpreter and costumer from Grand Rapids, will demonstrate the process of dressing, layer-by-layer as a Victorian Lady at the New Groningen Schoolhouse, 10537 Paw Paw Drive on Saturday, June 22 at 2:00 p.m.
This process starts with the underpinnings of lace-trimmed underwear, petticoats and more petticoats, dress and shawl, lacy umbrella to keep the sun off of pale skin, high button shoes, gloves, revealing the full complement of clothing for the properly dressed Victorian Lady. Other antique fashions, wedding accessories and personal items are part of the program.
