Zeelander, Hendrick "Henry" B. Van Dyke,
an immigrant from the Netherlands,
served in the American Civil War.
On Friday, December 13, Ken Kolk will discuss the experiences of the 25th Michigan Volunteers, company I, "the Dutch Company," particularly in December of 1862.
This company was distinctive in that they received their orders in Dutch, and they were known for their discipline and skill as soldiers.
Because their greatest victory came at the same time as Gettysburg, they have become all but forgotten. Nevertheless, their contribution was significant.
Civil War re-enactor, Cherrie Weener, will be on hand to discuss what life was like on the home front when the men were off to war.
